Car Of The Month: BMW M4
Our car of the month for February 2023 is the spirited BMW M4. This high-performance car was introduced after the BMW M3 saloon and has virtually the same underpinnings, just applied to a sleeker coupe model. Driving performance
The BMW M4 is powered by an M TwinPower Turbo straight six petrol engine which delivers 551hp and 650Nm of torque. It has a top speed of 190mph and can achieve 0-62mph in as little as 3.7 seconds. As fast as this may seem, the BMW M4 Competition is even faster, capable of achieving the same in an astounding 3.5 seconds.
The model feels incredibly sharp to drive with firm grip at the rear, although switch it to Comfort mode and you’ll experience a much smoother and more refined ride with lighter steering, ideal for motorway cruising. The customisation and settings can take a while to get used to just because there are so many potential configurations, but once you have the hang of it you will really be able to optimise your ride. You can alter brake sensitivity, accelerator responsiveness, traction control and all sorts, and once you figure out your preferences, these changes can be really beneficial.
Practicality
Considering it is a coupe, legroom in the BMW M4 is decent for front and rear passengers, and in comparison with the standard BMW 4 Series, the M model gets wider sports seats in the front. The sloping roofline does limit headroom for passengers in the rear though and with it being a 2-door coupe, accessing the back will require squeezing past the front seats. If you regularly have rear passengers and prefer to have front and back doors, the BMW M3 or BMW M5 might be more to your taste.
Interior
The interior is similar to the 4-Series with a few sporty touches, including performance seating, bright red M mode buttons, carbon fibre trim, and a sports steering wheel with red stitch detail. There’s a wide variety of interior trims including bold colour schemes and leather detailing options to suit your personal preferences too. The driving position can be precisely adjusted and the infotainment system is widely considered one of the best on the market, operated by a 10.3-inch central touchscreen alongside a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel.
